Best Free Church Presentation Software (2026): Honest Picks and What You Give Up

The free church presentation software worth considering in 2026, including WorshipMetrics Present, FreeShow, OpenLP, WorshipTools Presenter and VideoPsalm, what 'free ProPresenter' really means, and what churches give up by not paying.

Best Free Church Presentation Software (2026): Honest Picks and What You Give Up

Every church needs to put words on a screen. Not every church has budget for it. The good news: in 2026 there’s genuinely good free church presentation software, and some of it is as capable as the paid tools churches used a few years ago.

The less good news: “free” means four different things in this market, and the difference matters on a Sunday morning. This guide sorts the options honestly, including our own, and is upfront about what you give up by not paying.

We checked every product’s own website for its current status and pricing on October 17, 2026.

What “free” actually means

The first two can run a service. The third is for preparing slides or evaluating. The fourth works in a pinch, but you’ll feel what’s missing every week.

The options in detail

WorshipMetrics Present (our product)

Present is the presentation part of WorshipMetrics. It’s free forever, with unlimited users and no credit card, and it isn’t a stripped-down version of a paid product.

What you get:

  • A real 1920×1080 slide editor with themes, layered items and shrink-to-fit text.
  • Lyrics from a song library that keeps arrangements and keys, with section colors so operators can see the shape of the song.
  • Scripture in six translations (KJV, ASV, WEB, YLT, Darby and BBE), turned into slides from a reference.
  • Stage display with chord charts transposed to the key you’re playing in.
  • Multiple screens straight from a browser, plus NDI output and SDI or HDMI through a Blackmagic device from the free Tech Manager desktop app.
  • Macros, timers, data-driven overlays, and triggers that fire lights, switchers and sound (OSC, MIDI, HTTP, RossTalk, OBS and Q-SYS) from a slide.
  • Edit from any browser, present from any computer. Slides, songs and media live in your church’s account, so the pastor can fix a sermon slide at home and it’s in the booth, and more than one operator can work at once.
  • Imports ProPresenter 7 shows straight into Present, and ProPresenter 4–6, ChordPro, OpenLyrics and OpenSong files through Songs.

What you give up: Present drives screens from Chrome or Edge, so it isn’t for a church committed to Safari or Firefox in the booth. Its built-in Bible library is six translations, far fewer than EasyWorship’s or VideoPsalm’s. NDI and SDI outputs need the Tech Manager desktop app on the booth computer. The free plan includes 10 GB of storage; Pro and Max add more room and Bitfocus Companion control. And it’s newer than the long-established tools.

FreeShow

FreeShow is a free, open-source presentation app (GPL-3.0) for Windows, Mac and Linux, and it’s one of the most actively developed free options: version 1.6.6 shipped in October 2026, with betas following within days. It has stage display, NDI output, Planning Center sync, Bible import through API.Bible, and imports from ProPresenter, EasyWorship and OpenSong.

What you give up: support comes from the community, not a vendor. It’s a desktop app, so editing happens on the computer it’s installed on, or you manage file sharing yourself.

OpenLP

OpenLP is the long-standing open-source option for Windows, Mac and Linux. It handles songs, Bibles and media, has a web, Android and iOS remote, and shows a stage view in any browser. The current stable release is 3.1.7 (February 2025), with version 4.0 in early alpha.

What you give up: no vendor support, a slower release pace, and an interface that shows its age.

WorshipTools Presenter

WorshipTools (formerly Worship Extreme) offers Presenter “free forever” on Mac and Windows, with unlimited installs, 45+ Bible translations, SongSelect import and NDI.

What you give up: stage display, the mobile remote and multiple outputs are in the paid Pro plan, so the free tier suits churches with one screen and no confidence monitor.

VideoPsalm

VideoPsalm is free Windows software with a very large Bible library (2,000+ translations), a songbook library, CCLI song file import, and a portable version that runs from a USB stick. Version 1.29 was released in February 2025.

What you give up: there’s no Mac version, and its site doesn’t mention stage display or NDI.

Quelea and EasySlides

Quelea is open source for Windows and Mac, with a stage view that shows chords and a way to send lyrics to phones. Its last release was in February 2024, so updates are infrequent. EasySlides (formerly Easislides) is free Windows software for lyrics and Bible projection, updated in October 2026.

Google Slides, PowerPoint and Keynote

They’re free and everyone knows them. For a small church with a few songs and one screen, they work. What you lose is everything worship-specific: a song library, rearranging sections on the fly, Bible lookup, CCLI reporting, a separate stage display, and clean outputs for the livestream.

Options to avoid

  • Lyricue hasn’t had a release since 2017, and its maintainer now recommends FreeShow.
  • OpenSong hasn’t had a release since a 2021 beta.
  • “Free ProPresenter” downloads from unofficial sites. Cracked copies violate the license and are a common way to get malware onto the booth computer.

What about “free ProPresenter”?

ProPresenter isn’t free. New users subscribe for $29 a month or $289 a year per seat. You can download it and build presentations for free, but the free mode puts a watermark on the output at random intervals, so it isn’t meant for Sunday services. There’s a 14-day full trial, which needs a credit card and turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel.

What you give up by not paying

Being honest about free software means naming the trade-offs. Not every free option has every one of these, but most have some:

  • Someone to call on Sunday morning. Open-source projects are supported by forums and volunteers. When the projector goes blank at 9:55, that matters.
  • Integrations. Planning Center sync, SongSelect import and automatic CCLI reporting save hours a month. Check which ones your choice has.
  • Advanced outputs. SDI, key and fill for a switcher, and many outputs at once are where paid tools have historically been strongest.
  • Bible translations. Licensed modern translations cost money; free tools usually include public-domain ones.
  • Continuity. A volunteer-maintained project can slow down or stop, as Lyricue did. Look at the release history before you build your library in it.
  • Training and polish. Paid tools tend to have more tutorials, templates and volunteers who already know them.

Costs that don’t go away with free software

Free software doesn’t make worship lyrics free:

  • A church copyright license for projecting lyrics. CCLI prices its Church Copyright License by attendance, from $83 a year for the smallest churches to $297 a year for 100 to 199 people, according to CCLI’s pricing data.
  • A streaming license if you stream worship songs, such as CCLI’s Streaming License, from $84 a year.
  • A computer and outputs that can drive your screens.

SongSelect lyrics are free for CCLI license holders, which makes building a library in any of these tools much faster.

How to choose

If your church…Consider
Wants a free tool the whole team can edit from anywhere, and may add planning or streaming laterWorshipMetrics Present
Wants a free desktop app with stage display and NDI, and is comfortable with community supportFreeShow
Runs Linux or prefers a long-established open-source projectOpenLP or FreeShow
Is Windows-only and needs many Bible translationsVideoPsalm
Has one screen and wants a polished free tier with a paid upgrade pathWorshipTools Presenter
Has a production team, a budget and needs advanced outputsA paid tool: compare EasyWorship and ProPresenter

Before you commit, run one complete Sunday rehearsal in your choice with the volunteer who’ll actually run it: import five songs, build a scripture reading, set up the stage display, and send the lyrics to the stream. You’ll learn more in an hour than from any feature list.

Related questions

Is there free church presentation software?
Yes. WorshipMetrics Present is free forever with unlimited users and runs in a browser. FreeShow and OpenLP are free, open-source desktop programs for Windows, Mac and Linux. VideoPsalm and EasySlides are free for Windows, and WorshipTools Presenter has a free tier with paid upgrades.
Is ProPresenter free?
No. ProPresenter is sold as a subscription, $29 a month or $289 a year per seat for new users. You can download it and build presentations for free, but the free mode puts a watermark on the output at random intervals, so it isn't meant for Sunday services. There's a 14-day full trial that needs a credit card.
What is the best free alternative to ProPresenter?
For most churches, WorshipMetrics Present or FreeShow. Present is free forever, imports ProPresenter 7 shows, runs in a browser and lets a team edit from anywhere. FreeShow is a free, open-source desktop app that imports ProPresenter files, with stage display and NDI.
Do we still need a CCLI license if our presentation software is free?
Yes. The software doesn't change your copyright obligations. Projecting song lyrics needs a church copyright license such as CCLI's, priced by attendance, and streaming worship songs needs a separate streaming license.
What do churches give up with free presentation software?
Usually some of: phone support on a Sunday morning, integrations like Planning Center and SongSelect auto-reporting, advanced outputs such as SDI, a large Bible library, and the certainty that the software will still be maintained in five years. Some free tools also lock features like stage display behind a paid tier.
