XR18 Network Setup: Router vs Direct Ethernet for Churches

Configure reliable XR18 networking for churches. Compare Wi-Fi vs Ethernet connections, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and optimize for stable live production.

XR18 Network Setup: Router vs Direct Ethernet for Churches

The XR18 is a networked mixer, meaning it communicates with your control tablets and computers over a network connection. The quality and reliability of this network directly impacts your mixing experience. Poor network conditions can cause lag, connection dropouts, or inability to control the mixer during critical moments. Understanding your network options and choosing the right setup for your church is essential.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

The XR18 has built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to control it wirelessly from tablets and phones. No cables running across the room. Your operator can stand anywhere with an iPad and mix from the front of house or backstage.

To connect the XR18 to Wi-Fi, access the network settings on the mixer (through the X Air app or via the mixer’s setup menu). Select your church’s Wi-Fi network and enter the password. The XR18 connects and becomes part of your wireless network.

The advantage is convenience and flexibility. The disadvantage is that Wi-Fi is inherently less stable than wired connections. Interference from other wireless devices, distance from the access point, physical obstacles, and environmental factors can all degrade the Wi-Fi signal. For live production, this instability is problematic.

Ethernet Direct Connection

For production reliability, a wired Ethernet connection is superior. Connect the XR18’s Ethernet port directly to your network switch or router using a standard CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable. The connection is rock-solid, low-latency, and immune to interference.

Many churches run a dedicated Ethernet line from their network closet or switch to the XR18’s location. This ensures the mixer always has a reliable connection. The cable becomes part of your permanent installation, just like the audio cables.

Once the XR18 is connected to Ethernet, you can control it via X Air app on tablets over either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The important thing is that the mixer itself has a stable wired connection.

Hybrid Setup: Ethernet Plus Wi-Fi Tablets

The ideal setup for most churches is Ethernet for the XR18, and Wi-Fi for the operator tablets. The mixer maintains a rock-solid connection, while your operators enjoy the freedom of wireless control.

Example: The XR18 is mounted in a rack and connected to your network via Ethernet. Your primary mixing engineer controls it from an iPad on Wi-Fi, standing in the audience. Your streaming engineer uses a separate tablet on the same Wi-Fi, managing the streaming mix from a different location. Both tablets communicate with the wired XR18.

If your church Wi-Fi has occasional hiccups, you can add a second Ethernet-connected device as a backup. If the primary operator’s Wi-Fi disconnects, another engineer can grab an Ethernet-connected laptop and regain control.

Setting Up a Dedicated Network for the XR18

For churches that require maximum reliability, a dedicated network just for audio equipment is possible. Instead of connecting the XR18 to your main church Wi-Fi (which might have many devices and interference), you set up a separate Wi-Fi access point or router dedicated to the XR18 and your mixing tablets.

This approach requires more hardware and setup, but it eliminates interference from guest devices, printing systems, and other church operations. Your mixing devices are on their own protected network.

To set this up, add a Wi-Fi access point to your audio rack or tech booth. Connect the XR18 to this access point via Ethernet. Connect your mixing tablets to the access point via Wi-Fi. The dedicated network carries only audio control traffic, resulting in optimal performance.

Network Performance Optimization

If you’re using Wi-Fi to connect to the XR18, optimize your setup. Position the mixer and tablets close to the Wi-Fi access point. Aim for a strong signal—if you see only one or two bars of signal strength, you’re too far away. Move closer or use an access point with better range.

Check for interference. Wi-Fi operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency band (and sometimes 5 GHz), which is shared with microwave ovens, cordless phones, and wireless speakers. Keep these devices away from your audio equipment.

Choose a Wi-Fi channel with minimal overlap. Modern routers allow you to select which channel to broadcast on. Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to see which channels other networks are using in your area, and choose a clear channel for your audio access point.

For maximum stability, use a modern Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) capable access point. Older Wi-Fi 4 access points can work but are less stable and slower.

Ethernet Cable Considerations

If running Ethernet to the XR18, use quality CAT5e or CAT6 cables. These are inexpensive and last indefinitely. Avoid cheap cables that might have poor connections or shielding issues.

If running Ethernet a long distance (more than 100 feet), verify your cable quality. At extreme distances, use CAT6 for better reliability.

Properly terminate cables. Use a cable tester to verify that each Ethernet cable is correctly wired before relying on it for production.

Network Security

Your XR18 network should be password-protected. Set a strong Wi-Fi password if you’re using Wi-Fi, and a strong password on the mixer itself to require authentication in the X Air app.

Change default passwords on the XR18 if there are any. Prevent unauthorized users from controlling your mixer by securing the network.

If you have guest Wi-Fi for church members or visitors, keep it completely separate from your audio control network. Guests should not have access to the network controlling your mixer.

Troubleshooting Network Issues

XR18 doesn’t appear in the X Air app device list: Verify that both the mixer and tablet are on the same network. Restart both devices. Check that the XR18 is actually powered on and fully booted.

Connection is intermittent or keeps dropping: If on Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point. Switch to Ethernet if possible. Ensure no other devices are heavily using your network bandwidth.

App is slow or laggy to respond: Network latency is too high. Check your Wi-Fi signal strength. Try Ethernet. Reduce interference. Restart your router.

Can’t enter the network settings on the XR18: Some network settings require accessing the mixer directly, not through the app. Check the XR18’s front panel for a Setup button, or consult the manual for network configuration procedures.

Based on reliability and ease of use: Connect the XR18 via Ethernet to your network switch. Optionally, if you don’t have Ethernet at the XR18’s location, connect via Wi-Fi but use a dedicated audio access point.

Operators control the XR18 via X Air app on tablets. Tablets can be on your main church Wi-Fi or a dedicated audio Wi-Fi, depending on your setup complexity.

Create a redundancy plan: If your primary control tablet loses Wi-Fi, have a backup Ethernet-connected computer or tablet ready to take over.

Advanced Networking Considerations

For churches with complex IT infrastructure, you might integrate the XR18 into your main network using VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) to prioritize audio traffic. This ensures mixing commands always have sufficient bandwidth even if other network traffic is heavy.

For very large churches or venues, Dante networking (a professional audio network standard) offers superior capabilities, but the XR18 doesn’t support Dante. This is a consideration if you’re planning multi-room distributions or complex audio routing across multiple devices.

For most churches, the networking setup outlined here is more than adequate. Get Ethernet to the mixer if possible, use a clean Wi-Fi for tablets, secure everything with passwords, and you’ve got a rock-solid control system.

Network Setup Checklist

Before your first service, verify your network setup:

  1. XR18 has either Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to your network
  2. X Air app launches and finds the XR18 within a few seconds
  3. Control from the tablet is responsive and immediate
  4. If using Ethernet, the connection remains stable over 30+ minutes
  5. If using Wi-Fi, signal strength is strong (-50 dB or better)
  6. Multiple tablets can connect simultaneously if needed
  7. Password protection is enabled on the mixer
  8. You have tested backup control methods in case primary connection fails

Investing time in network setup pays dividends in operational reliability. The XR18 is a network device first and foremost, and a solid network foundation ensures smooth mixing every Sunday.
